Hands-On

“HANDS-ON” – That is the theme of this year’s Conference for the Association of Software Testing to be held August 8th and 9th in San Diego, California.

That is it. That is the entire theme. “HANDS-ON”. We have intentionally left the theme open to anything hands-on that has to do with improving context-driven testing in any way.

The two-day conference is going to be packed with tutorials and hands-on workshops where participants will be able to practice the skills that they are seeing. Instead of just being shown new ideas or concepts, at CAST 2022 you will be able to immediately apply what you are learning – which will help solidify the lessons and allow you to apply them more effectively once you return to work.

The first day of the conference will be full of learning opportunities. You will have a selection of four different five hour long tutorials. These sessions will introduce concepts and allow hands-on activities to help you practice what was covered. Then, after a break, there will be a five hour long test-a-thon where the tutorial instructors, along with other speakers, will be in the room and available to help you apply your newly learned skills.

The second day of CAST 2022 will have keynote talks and track sessions that will focus on hands-on testing skills that you will be able to apply in your daily work.

Call for Proposals

We invite you to share your experiences and thoughts related to our theme, Hands-On. We are looking for a broad and diverse scope of submissions.  We strongly encourage and prefer proposals based on your personal experiences.

What are we really looking for?

We are looking for your participation as a speaker. If you have a particular approach to testing that can be applied by others then we want to hear from you. Please apply to speak whether you have tips and tricks for exploratory testing in general or an innovative approach to security testing, performance testing, accessibility, risk-analysis, modeling, coaching or any other aspect of context-driven testing.

We are looking for diversity in topics, diversity in speakers, and diversity in teaching methods. We are always on the lookout for new speakers. Please do not think to yourself: “no one is interested in what I am doing.” If what you are doing is helping you be a better tester, raising the image of testing or making testing more efficient/effective then we are interested in what you are doing.

Types of Sessions

We are seeking abstracts and proposals in line with the conference theme in these formats:

Track Sessions consist of a presentation of up to 40-45 minutes, plus 20-30 minutes of moderated question and discussion time. The best track session is probably an experience report from a real project. Sessions that present teaching material are also common. Other formats might be debates and panel discussions.

Tutorials are 5-hour long sessions where the speaker will lead a discussion with emphasis on presenting skills and how to practice those skills. We’re looking for tutorials that create concrete artifacts for participants to take home such as lists, mind maps, or other findings. Please discuss the tutorial content, learning objectives, and deliverables created by students in the submission form.

Proposals

Proposals are to be submitted through PaperCall.IO. You do not need to be a member of AST to submit a proposal or to speak.

Speaker Compensation

AST is offering two nights of hotel and travel reimbursement of up to $750. And of course, a full conference ticket. We are also offering honorariums for speakers at $250 for a Track Session and $1500 for a Tutorial. Paired presenters will split the honorarium and travel expense reimbursement.

Code of Conduct

All Speakers and Attendees are subject to the CAST Code of Conduct. By applying to speak, you are indicating your willingness to comply with the Code.
