Sathish Mondi

ABOUT ME:

I am a Quality Engineering leader with over 24 years of experience transforming testing from a reactive, manual process into an automation-first, AI/ML-powered discipline that drives measurable business value. I’ve led large-scale global QE organizations including a 2800-member team across Americas, EMEA, and APAC at HCL Tech, with 400 dedicated to USAA — and currently serve as Head of Quality Engineering at Frost Bank, overseeing 150+ engineers across 60+ enterprise platforms.

My career has evolved alongside the industry’s transformation: from manual test execution to agile in-sprint automation, DevOps-driven CI/CD integration, API/microservices validation, cloud and digital testing transformation, and now AI/ML testing and “testing for AI” solutions, including agentic QA models. I have delivered impact by embedding quality into every stage of delivery — increasing automation coverage from 30% to 90%, achieving defect removal efficiency ≥97%, and enabling zero Sev-1 escapes for major launches.

One of my most rewarding contributions has been training and grooming over 1,000 manual testers into specialized roles such as automation SMEs, SDETs, product test specialists, and mobile automation engineers. This large-scale skill transformation enhanced career growth for individuals and created high-performance teams capable of delivering modern, automation-led testing in complex, regulated environments.

I believe quality is not a gate but a culture — a shared responsibility across engineering, product, and business teams. My leadership approach blends technical depth with strategic vision: implementing federated QE operating models, self-healing automation, predictive defect analytics, and enterprise quality dashboards that halve decision-making time.

If elected to the AST Board, I will bring:
• Global Perspective – Proven success leading culturally diverse teams and delivering strategies across industries such as banking, insurance, payments, and digital platforms.
• Technical Vision – Expertise in AI/ML testing, model validation, agentic QA, synthetic data generation, and large-scale performance engineering.
• Community Building – Experience building communities of practice, mentoring leaders, and connecting enterprise needs with grassroots innovation.

My key initiatives for AST include:
1. Open-Industry Collaborations – Creating reusable, open-source testing frameworks, datasets, and accelerators.
2. Global Mentorship & Skill Uplift – Expanding AST’s reach into emerging markets and enabling testers to transition into SDET, DevOps, and AI roles.
3. AI/ML & Emerging Tech Programs – Offering practical training, workshops, and case studies to prepare testers for the next era of quality engineering.
My goal is to help AST lead the profession into a future where testers are empowered, connected, and ready to deliver quality at the speed of innovation.

WHY QUALITY? In 2 paragraphs give us an overview of your philosophy on Quality and how you approach testing in support of achieving quality outcomes… Please provide (non-confidential) real world examples:

I strongly believe that quality is not one team's responsibility and gate at the end of delivery — it’s a culture and an engineering discipline embedded into every stage of the lifecycle. I see quality engineering as a value enabler, ensuring products are resilient, performant, secure, and customer-centric. This requires shifting left, adopting an automation-first mindset, using data to guide decisions, and making quality a shared responsibility across engineering, product, and business teams. Success is not measured by defects found, but by defects prevented and the confidence to release at speed.

At Frost Bank, I transformed testing across 60+ platforms into a federated, automation-first QE model. For the FedNow Real-Time Payments launch, we embedded quality gates into CI/CD, automated 85% of E2E scenarios, and used predictive defect analytics — reducing release cycles by 30% and achieving zero Sev-1 production defects. At USAA, I implemented a GenAI-powered self-healing automation framework that boosted test coverage from 30% to 90% and cut defect leakage by 65%. These experiences reinforce my belief that quality is achieved through continuous, data-driven collaboration — not as a final checkpoint, but as an integral part of product delivery.

This board role will require 10 - 20 hours per month of often self driven activities and the ideal candidate is someone who is willing to own an initiative and drive it through to completion... Is this something you are willing to commit to, and in your most honest moment, what will keep you motivated when the work gets hard and progress feels slow?

Commitment & Motivation
Yes — I’m fully committed to dedicating 10–20 hours per month to AST board work, and I thrive in self-driven roles where accountability and initiative are expected. Throughout my career, whether leading a 2800-member global QE organization at HCL Tech or driving enterprise-wide testing transformations at Frost Bank and USAA, I’ve owned large-scale initiatives end-to-end — from idea to measurable outcomes — often alongside my primary executive responsibilities.

When progress feels slow, my motivation comes from impact and community. Impact, because incremental steps can lead to transformational outcomes — like moving an organization from manual testing to AI-powered, self-healing automation. Community, because AST’s mission aligns with my belief that advancing the craft of testing uplifts careers and industries worldwide.

It's 2030. AST just won 'Global Nonprofit of the Year' for transforming testing careers worldwide. What three bold moves did we make between 2025-2030 that nobody saw coming?

Follow-up: Which of these moves would you personally champion, and how would you convince skeptics on the board?

Three Bold Moves:

AST Global Testing Guild – A free, decentralized credentialing network for AI, DevOps, security, and domain testing skills, recognized by leading employers.

Open-Source Test IP Collaboratives – Partnerships with enterprises to co-create reusable frameworks, synthetic datasets, and domain-specific accelerators.

Quality Impact Index (QII) – A global benchmark measuring the economic and societal value of quality practices.

My Focus: I’d champion Open-Source Test IP Collaboratives, using my experience leading 2800+ global QE engineers to connect enterprise needs with community talent.

Convincing Skeptics: I’d propose starting with a single high-demand pilot (e.g., AI/ML model validation), measure adoption and ROI, and use results to scale — showing this as a strategic platform for global testing influence, not just a community experiment.

What's one thing AST is doing right now that we should stop doing immediately, even if it's popular? And what's one bold experiment we should try, even if it might fail spectacularly?

What to Rebalance – AST’s conferences are valuable, but focusing on them as the primary touchpoint limits year-round engagement and excludes those without travel budgets. Rebalancing toward continuous virtual programs would make AST more inclusive and relevant between events.

Bold Experiment to Try
Bold Experiment – Launch a Global Quality Hackathon Series: a 72-hour virtual collaboration where testers worldwide tackle real enterprise challenges from partner companies, focusing on AI/ML testing solutions, testing for AI products, Native Mobile Automation, Micro-Services based large product design, IoT, large-scale data quality and domain-specific testing. Deliverables — reusable frameworks, synthetic datasets, playbooks — would be open-source for the community. Even if participation starts small, this could position AST as the hub for applied, global-scale testing innovation.

What is your history with AST? Describe why you are interested in serving on the AST Board and what personal / professional strengths make you an ideal board member for the organization?

Follow Up: Are there any particular initiatives or areas you are especially interested in driving / leading?

My History & Interest in AST
While I haven’t held a formal AST role, I’ve long admired its mission to advance testing craft, challenge traditional thinking, and foster global community. Over 24 years, I’ve led quality transformations across banking, insurance, payments, and digital platforms — including at HCL Tech, where I oversaw 2800 global QE professionals (North America, EMEA, APAC) serving clients like USAA (400+ QE team). I’m drawn to the AST Board because it offers the chance to share my global perspective, technical depth, and leadership experience to help shape the future of our profession.

Strengths & Ideal Fit
I combine strategic leadership with deep technical expertise — scaling global teams, embedding automation-first and AI/ML-powered testing, and building high-impact communities of practice. You're on a board committee with members from Japan, Brazil, Nigeria, Germany, and the US. The group is stuck on a decision because cultural communication styles are clashing and creating misunderstandings. What is your strategy for facilitating breakthrough and building genuine consensus?

Follow-up: Provide an example of how you've successfully worked across significant cultural or professional differences.

I’d set a clear decision framework — defining scope, success criteria, and constraints — while acknowledging that cultural norms influence how people express agreement or concerns. I’d restate points in neutral language, confirm understanding, and blend synchronous discussions with asynchronous inputs to ensure all voices are heard. The focus: uncover interests behind positions to co-create solutions everyone supports.

Example: At HCL Tech, leading a 2800-member global QE team, I introduced AI/ML testing pilots across US, EMEA, and APAC delivery centers. Some teams were eager; others cautious due to regulation and skills gaps. I facilitated workshops to surface these concerns, launched a low-risk pilot in a neutral domain, and shared early measurable wins. This built trust, aligned priorities, and led to global adoption of AI/ML testing practices — improving defect prediction and self-healing automation for multiple clients.
