Turning Numbers into Knowledge: Mastering the Art of Problem Solving
Over the past 40 years, software design and construction techniques have evolved spectacularly. Each year, we build larger and more complex programs that we could the year before. Unfortunately, many of our test techniques and management maxims come decades past -- a time when software was simpler and computer time cost more than people. We must foster significant advances in both theory and practice of testing to catch up with the progress in technology and programming.
CAST brings together testers from around the globe in hopes of advancing the understanding and practice of software testing.
Check out the CAST program to see what we have lined up for 2009.
What makes CAST special?
- CAST puts CONFER back into CONFERence: At least 1/3rd of every session is reserved for facilitated discussion. Conferring with testing practitioners and leaders is part of the program -- not just something that happens after hours in the hotel bar.
- CAST presentations are tied to a theme: This year's theme is Serving Our Stakeholders. Only rarely do we test software solely for the joy of finding a bug. We test software because someone wants us to provide them with quality-related information about their software so they can make better decisions, fix important bugs, and/or assess regulatory compliance. Those someones are stakeholders. Come to CAST 2009 to learn to better serve your stakeholders.
- CAST is free from thinly veiled sales pitches: CAST sessions are about experience, practice, and ideas -- not just products. Any vendor sessions are clearly identified and have a third of the time allocated for your questions.
- CAST contains new content: Most of the presentations and tutorials at CAST are first-run content. We've assembled a cast of practitioners and thought-leaders with interesting stories and provoking ideas.
- CAST is preceded by unique tutorials:
AST has lined up seven unique interactive one-day tutorials -- each led
by recognized thought leaders in their areas of expertise.
- Turning Numbers Into Knowledge: Getting the Numbers You Need
- Jonathan Koomey
- Ensuring Testing's Proper Place in the Organization
- Gerald Weinberg
- Experiencing Agile Integration
- Mike Dwyer
- Teach YOURSELF Software Testing
- James Bach
- Translating Stakeholder Performance Desires
- Scott Barber & Dawn Haynes
- Testing Your Testing: Determining Risks
- Fiona Charles & Michael Bolton
- Turning Numbers Into Knowledge: Getting the Numbers You Need
Come to CAST and help advance the understanding and practice of testing -- at your organization and around the globe. CAST 2009 is designed to bring people together to learn from one another. You’ll have opportunities to share your ideas and learn from thought-leaders, trainers, authors, and peers.
Peer Reviewers Needed
Posted June 4th, 2009 by bsimoAST is in need of additional volunteers to review papers scheduled to be presented at the 4th annual Conference of the Association for Software Testing, CAST 2009.
If you are willing and able to review papers, please send an email to cfp@associationforsoftwaretesting.org stating your availability by June 9th. [We are still accepting peer reviewers beyond the 9th provided they are able to return feedback to paper authors by June 17th.] Please include a list of your top four to six choices of papers to review. You can find the session topics at http://program.CAST2009.org.

A message from the AST President
Posted September 17th, 2008 by bsimoDear Members,
First, I want to personally thank each and every one of you for the warm welcome I have received since becoming President of AST. I first heard of AST about two years ago and was intrigued by the idea of a professional association for software testers. I joined AST without very high expectations. Some people I respect greatly were members and I figured it was worth the risk of a year's membership fees to see what it was all about. I quickly learned that joining AST was a wise investment. Since then, I have learned that AST is a great organization filled with wonderful people -- people that care about testing and testers. My experience as President over the past couple months has greatly increased my appreciation for the Association and its members. I am humbled that you elected me to the Board of Directors and that the Board selected me to lead our community as President of the Association. I am committed to doing all I can to live up to the expectations you have of me; and will do whatever I can to enable you to build AST into the organization we all know it can be.
To that end, the rest of this letter is a sort of "State of the Association" address, in which I share a bit about where we've been and more about where we're going. I have seen the Association become more member focused over the past couple years. It is my intent to see that we continue that trend.
